What’s in a Coffee Shop Name?

For paid subscribers: Naming a coffee company is tricky, and choosing the wrong one can result in controversy. Just ask Bad Ass Coffee of Hawaii.

Choosing a good name for your coffee company is important, but can be tricky. It should be memorable and unique, straightforward to copyright, and allow for easy branding. Most will also say to keep the name short, although I have a soft spot for long names, especially when they could also be 2000s indie bands.

Ideally, the name should also not upset people, although that is harder than it seems. There have been several instances of coffee company names being deemed offensive—some of them legitimate, others not so much. My favourite remains Bad Ass Coffee of Hawaii, an incredibly tame pun that has nonetheless managed to angrify many people over the years.
